Portrait of a young woman with curly hair and blazer, Amanda Starling

My name is Amanda Starling, and I’m a product expert with a decade experience in crafting human-centered experiences that enhance healthcare experiences. I'm fascinated by how people engage with experiences and use technology to solve their problems.

I'm a full stack User Experience Designer who prioritizes the holistic human-centered design and in turn, journey. I leverage all steps and tools from Discovery and Framing and Design Sprint methodologies to provide a "custom sneaker" experience for different stakeholders and projects. My professional background is varied, including healthcare, cybersecurity, entertainment, digital marketing and products, media and journalism, web game play, and additional emerging markets. I'm currently applying my skills in Digital Ventures at Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute.

Stepping into the world of innovation, I’ve conducted critical engagements and research that support the due diligence and incubation of intellectual properties and partnerships, as well as ideas to spin up new companies. Additionally, I’ve contributed to an accelerator team with efforts to educate on and select start-up companies to mentor. I’ve also designed workshops to help advocate for collaborative, multi-organizational projects that enable solutions in the fight against cancer throughout CancerX.

When I’m not designing, I’m usually reading my way through my never-ending books and comics pile, spending time with family or friends, exploring local art and music, or trying to set a new record for how many times I’ve rode Star Tours in a row at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (current record: 7).

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me - please reach out with any questions or if you’d just like to connect!

FAQs

Where are you located?

I’m located in sunny Tampa Bay, Florida. It’s the perfect hub for all things technology, the arts, healthcare, beaches… you name it, we have it! As a Tampa Bay healthtech UX designer, I bring experience from working across multiple health systems and with a variety of experiences across the spectrum of journeys.

Are you available for freelance projects?

Yes, though this may depend on your industry and if there is any line of competition with my current employer. I’m available to provide UX consultation services for healthcare, cybersecurity, B2B, conversational UX, and gaming. I always want to create new skills, and would love to try a project in your field! Contact me here to get started.

I’m looking for community - where do I find it for UX?

I’m a member of Tampa Bay User Experience (TBUX) and Tampa Bay Designers, both who are fantastic meetups that bring together creatives across tech and other industries. Some meet twice a month, others over virtual coffee chats. I’m a big fan of co-working with other designers, so keep an eye out for meetup events!

Why healthcare UX?

To put it simply, I care first and foremost about helping people. Technology is a powerful tool, and I’ve contributed first hand to how something as simple as making it easier to find a provider translates to more accessible care. Or how mapping out a new application can support a researcher trying to make a difference in a patient’s journey. I’m passionate about impact and equitable care for all.

So which do you do - UI or UX?

In short - UI is UX. UI, also known as user interface (or even user interaction, for some designers!), one piece of the larger effort that is user experience design. UX brings together everything a person needs to complete a task successfully, and with delight.

They say unicorns aren’t real, and they’re right, but being a “jill of all trades” is real. I’m a designer who can conduct detailed user research, craft a product strategy with business and customer focus, design a meaningful solution, and test to make sure it serves its purpose.

What is your favorite Star Wars movie?

TRUST ME, this is the hardest question you could ask me. I like them all for different reasons, and it’s absolutely subjective based on my mood…

…but I’m always going to choose The Last Jedi. Why? I love a dark middle chapter and stories that challenge our heroes to stretch themselves into who they’re destined to be. Their assumptions and beliefs are challenged, and they come out better to serve those in need (hey, that sounds a little familiar… maybe like… user experience???)
