BayCare Health System

Finding BayCare Locations

Location often determines if a patient believes they can receive care in their community. As one of the most critical searches beyond finding a care provider, it was critical to make a searchable platform available for all of BayCare’s clinics, urgent care locations, fitness centers, and other available resources such as HealthHub.

PROJECT GOAL

Provide an accessible search experience to help patients easily locate BayCare facilities for their many potential needs, from urgent care to fitness wellbeing.

ROLE

My role was researcher and designer, combining the needs of the business and the development team to create a modern search experience combined with the advanced search tooling of Coveo.

Searching… (Before)

The "before" of Location Search on BayCare.org was limited to a fixed height/width with clunky scroll bars. Users would attempt to scroll on the screen and instead be forced to zoom in and out instead of navigating the full vertical height of the web page.

Additionally, users were unable to visually preview the locations to see where to go/what buildings would look like upon arrival. Providing visual affordances for the user, along with shortcuts, were among the suggestions for enhancement.

Reorganizing content with familiar inspiration

Design references for user research included popular apps such as Google Maps, Zillow, ZocDoc, and Airbnb. Users were more familiar with using these tools to locate new places, and preferred the summarization of locations with quick information such as addresses, phone numbers, and hours.

For locations that supported a line queue, I elevated the option on cards to allow users to see which time slots were available to “save a spot.” This would help with time savings and allow patients the ability to organize their day around their appointment.

Location Search Live

The implementation of this design took place after my time at BayCare, but many of the design elements remained in the final product.

Visual elements of the design shifted based on development component capabilities evolving upon go live. The organization of content and key interactive features to address patient needs were retained in the go-live design, which has led to higher engagement.
